You finally have the loft conversion you dreamed of, and it’s perfect.

But it’s summer now, and the once-coveted space of quiet and privacy is quickly turning into a hot and stuffy room you wish to avoid. This need not be the case.

A few simple tricks and measures will ensure that your loft remains cool even during hot days and humid nights. Want to know more? Read on below!

Ventilate

If your loft has windows and skylights that can be opened, use them to let in fresh air and allow heat to escape. Smart Velux windows are great options as they can automatically be opened and closed, particularly when the temperature gets too hot, or it starts to rain.

Adding more windows to your loft for increased ventilation is also a good option. For example, dormer windows are ideal for rear-facing walls (whereas windows on side-facing walls may need to be obscure-glazed in order to comply with privacy regulations).

Insulate

Though largely thought of in regards to keeping the heat in, proper insulation goes a long way in keeping the loft cool during the summer. This is because good quality insulation helps deflect heat while preventing the build-up of hot air in the loft.

So, use loft insulation rolls, boards, and radiant barriers to keep away the heat (and the very high energy bills).

Shield

While the best part of a loft room is usually the incredible views offered and the abundance of natural light that it receives through strategically-placed windows and roof lights, these may not work in your favour during the summer months.

Shield the room by installing shades, blinds, shutters, or curtains to block out the direct sunlight and ensure the loft stays cool.

Tile fittingly

Believe it or not, the colour of your roof tiles can actually affect how hot your loft becomes. How? Because darker colours absorb heat and transfer some of it into your home.

Therefore, choosing lightly-coloured tiles such as terracotta can help keep your home cooler. This may not always be possible due to planning restrictions in certain areas; but if you can make the change, do it!

Install cooling systems

Ceiling fans are great for air circulation and help the room feel much less stuffy. But, if you have the budget, install an air conditioning unit.

They help keep your loft cool and comfortable, no matter the weather outside. And with a solar-powered unit, you can even keep your energy bills down.

Conclusion

Being at the top of the house, it is not really surprising that the loft becomes so hot during the summer. Add to that the impact of the sunlight hitting your loft windows, and it becomes a blazing kiln.

Luckily, it doesn’t have to stay that way. Implement these easy measures, keep your home cool, and your utility bills down; all while enjoying your one-of-a-kind loft space.
